Assam: Cachar Low-lying Area Residents Asked To Relocate As Barak River Flows Above Danger Level

 

GUWAHATI: The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Cachar has urged residents living in low-lying areas to relocate to safer locations immediately as these are vulnerable to flooding given the rising water levels of the Barak River and continuing incessant rain.

An advisory, issued by Yubaraj Borthakur, Chief Executive Officer of DDMA Cachar and Additional District Commissioner, has asked citizens to take safety precautions.

Another order issued by Rohan Kumar Jha, District Magistrate and Chairman of DDMA, Cachar has restricted the movement of heavy vehicles in the sinking zone areas (Raigarh, Daspara, and Shibbari) of the Silchar-Kalain Road from 6:00 PM on May 29, until further notice. 

The advisory by the Chief Executive Officer, while highlighting the critical situation due to incessant rain and the Barak River flowing above the danger level also said the rainfall is predicted to continue, further aggravating the situation.

Residents have been advised by Cachar DDMA to:
- Follow news updates and emergency alerts.
- Keep essential supplies ready.
- Prohibit children from playing in floodwaters.
- Stay away from electric poles or power lines to avoid electrocution.
- Provide special assistance to senior citizens, pregnant women, children, and people with disabilities.
