Das, who is a former MLA from Karimganj, and the present Chairman of the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC), took his oath under Article 99 of the Constitution, strengthening his role in the upper house.
Bhattacharjee was elected to the post after he claimed 47 of the total 60 votes, thereby defeating his opponent and former CPI(M) MLA Sudhan Das. His induction solidifies BJP’s broader strategy to strengthen its presence in the Rajya Sabha, particularly ahead of the upcoming bye-elections.
Das’s elevation reflects BJP’s efforts to grow its footprint in Assam and the other northeastern states. Alongside Das, Tripura BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee also took his oath at the event, further boosting the party’s overall influence in the Northeast.
Taking to X, Dhankhar said, “Hon'ble Vice-President of India & Chairman, Rajya Sabha, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar administered oath to the elected Members of Rajya Sabha in Parliament House today.”
