Assam: BJP wins majority of seats in Panchayat Elections, surpasses Congress

GUWAHATI: After a dismal performance in the recently concluded assembly elections in five states, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) had reasons to celebrate in Assam after surpassing Congress in the panchayat polls, the counting of which will concluded on December 13.

As per the latest trends, BJP had won 211 Zila Parishad council seats while the Congress was trailing at 116 followed by AIUDF and AGP.

Similarly, the BJP grabbed the maximum number of seats for Anchalik Parishad (AP), Gram Panchayat president and Gram panchayat member.

The elections were conducted in two phases on December 5 and December 9 in a total of 26 districts, including 14 civil sub-divisions.

Polling was conducted in a total of 23505 polling stations across the state whereas the vote counting was carried out at 40 centres.

The party members credit their win to the hard work and meticulous planning over the past one and a half years.

BJP Assam general secretary Dilip Saikia informed G Plus that they had set up 27,000 booth committees in the state over the course of past one and a half years to strengthen the organisation from the grassroots.

“We had started preparing for the panchayat elections a long time ago. Not only booth committees, but for each page of the voters' list we have the Panna Pramukh. We have appointed around 3, 50,000 Panna Pramukhs for all the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies,” said Saikia.

He added that this apart, they had also established Shakti Kendras across the state. A Shakti Kendra is constituted by combining 4-5 booths and the party has formed 6,800 Shakti Kendras in Assam.

Another member informed that for the past one year they have been conducting regular meeting in these booth committees to acquaint themselves better with the problems of the people.

“Our main objective is to provide a corruption-free Panchayati Raj System,” informed Saikia.
