GUWAHATI: To boost the delivery and appeal mechanism of public services, the Assam Government approved the Assam Right to Public Services (Amendment) Bill, 2024 on July 31. This bill is set to be presented in the Autumn session of the Assam Legislative Assembly.

The Assam Right to Public Services (Amendment) Bill, 2024, proposes the establishment of the Assam State Commission for Right to Public Services. Key provisions of the bill include:
a) The Chief Commissioner of RTPS and the Commissioners of RTPS will be appointed by the Governor based on recommendations from a committee comprising:
- The Chief Minister, as the Chairperson
- The Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly
- A Cabinet Minister nominated by the Chief Minister
b) The Assam State Commission for Right to Public Services will be an independent three-member body consisting of one Chief Commissioner and two Commissioners. This Commission will function as a quasi-judicial entity.
The proposed Commission will have the authority to recommend disciplinary action against Designated Public Servants who consistently fail to provide the notified services.
