GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a ₹250 crore grant for Gauhati University during its 32nd Convocation ceremony on Friday, April 25. The funding will be released in phases and is aimed at expanding academic infrastructure, improving research capacity, and supporting new-age learning initiatives.

The convocation saw the participation of Assam governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya. Degrees were conferred upon 3,593 students at the graduate and postgraduate levels, and 148 students received doctoral degrees. Honorary PhDs were awarded to Dr. Amal Chandra Kataki, Former Director of Dr. B. Barooah Cancer Institute, Tapan Kumar Saikia, Honorary Director of Oncoscience, Jaslok Hospital & Research Institute, Mumbai and Chowna Mein, Deputy, Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh for their contributions in medicine and public service.
Taking to X, the Chief Minister said, “The @GauhatiUniv is an institution par excellence, which prepares a student holistically for new age avenues. To ensure that the University offers better learning opportunities, I also announced a phase-wise grant of ₹250cr for the historic institution.”
