Assam Announces Extension On Ban Of 500-ML Water Bottles, Bans 250-ml Bottles Instead

GUWAHATI: In a decisive move aimed at curbing plastic waste and mitigating environmental pollution, the Assam Government has prohibited the production and use of bottled drinking water or PET bottles with a volume of up to 250 ml within the state.

This prohibition is set to make a substantial impact in reducing the proliferation of plastic waste.

Plastic pollution has been a growing concern, and this measure is expected to contribute significantly to the state's efforts to combat it.

Furthermore, this decision holds the potential to benefit the state's commercial ecosystem, which provides livelihoods to thousands of individuals, both in formal and informal sectors.

By restricting the production and use of smaller PET bottles, the state aims to encourage eco-friendly alternatives and promote responsible plastic use.

It may be mentioned that the Assam Government previously made some changes in its earlier decision to ban single-use 500ml plastic water bottles from October 2, 2023.

The Government has now decided that the ban on 500ml bottles will be applicable from October 2, 2024, while the 250ml bottles will be banned from October 2, 2023.
