GUWAHATI: The All Adivasi Students' Association of Assam (AASAA) has planned to stage a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on December 8, to raise their persistent demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Adivasis of Assam.

Expected to draw over 300 participants, including leaders from central and district committees, the sit-in aims to bring attention to the challenges faced by the Adivasi community in Assam, according to media reports. Comprising groups such as Oraons, Santhals, Mundas, Kharias, Bhumij, Gonds, and Sawras, the Adivasi community has long been recognised as one of the most backward in the region.

Raja Kujur, Joint Secretary of AASAA's central committee, while speaking to media, expressed discontent with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that the party has not taken sufficient interest in fulfilling its promise regarding the ST status for Adivasis.
