GUWAHATI: The National President of the All India Mahila Congress, Alka Lamba, has addressed a letter to the President of India condemning Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his recent comments about women. The remarks were made during a public meeting held in Borsola, Dhekiajuli, and have drawn criticism across political and social platforms.

In the letter dated Thursday, May 1, Lamba described the chief minister's comments as "deeply objectionable and demeaning". She asserted that the remarks constituted not only a personal insult to women but also a “malicious attempt to demean the entire female population of this country”.
Lamba additionally added that the use of such language by a constitutional office bearer was “reprehensible and unacceptable”.
Furthermore, the Mahila Congress President stated that Sarma’s remarks violated the principles of gender equality and women’s empowerment guaranteed by the Indian Constitution. Referring to the statement as a deliberate attack on the self-respect of women, she sought immediate intervention from the President.
In her appeal, Lamba particularly demanded a formal and unconditional public apology from Sarma, and also called for a thorough investigation into the matter and appropriate constitutional action based on the findings.
Urging the President to uphold the dignity of women in public discourse, Lamba concluded that there was no place in a democratic society for such “disgraceful and regressive” remarks.
