56.41% Voter Turnout Recorded In First Phase of Assam’s Panchayat Polls

 

GUWAHATI: The first phase of the Assam Panchayat elections concluded on Friday, May 2, across 14 districts of the state, and it recorded an overall voter turnout of 56.41% by 3:30 PM. The polling process, which began at 7:30 AM and concluded at 4:30 PM, saw gradual increases in turnout throughout the day.

By 9:30 AM, the state had recorded a turnout of 10.24%, with Lakhimpur registering the highest early voting at 14%, followed by Majuli (12.77%) and Jorhat (12%). Dibrugarh recorded the lowest turnout at 7%, followed by Tinsukia (8.40%) and Cachar (8.5%).

As of 11:30 AM, overall turnout increased to 24.10%. Majuli topped the chart with 28.69%, followed by Hailakandi (27.61%) and Lakhimpur (27.6%). Dibrugarh and Tinsukia continued to show lower participation with 18% and 18.25% respectively.

By 1:30 PM, turnout had reached 41.87%, with Dhemaji (48.4%), Cachar (48.1%), and Lakhimpur (47.75%) registering the highest figures. Tinsukia (34.37%), Dibrugarh (35%), and Charaideo (37.09%) reported the lowest figures during this period.

At 3:30 PM, the latest update from the Assam State Election Commission showed a total turnout of 56.41%. Lakhimpur had the highest voter turnout at 66.5%, followed by Dhemaji (62.1%) and Majuli (61.67%). The districts of Dibrugarh (45%), Tinsukia (48.14%), and Charaideo (50.94%) recorded the lowest turnout.

Additionally, according to the Election Commission’s data, 348 candidates were elected unopposed. The ruling NDA secured 325 of these seats, including 37 zilla parishads and 288 anchalik panchayats. Congress, AIUDF, and Independent candidates won the remaining uncontested seats.

Polling was held in the districts of Sonitpur, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi. The elections were conducted for 216 zilla parishads, 94 anchalik panchayats, and 1,139 gaon panchayats.

The second phase of polling has been scheduled for May 7 in another 14 districts. Repolling, if required, will be held on May 4 for phase one and on May 9 for phase two. The counting of votes for both phases will take place on May 11.

Notably, final voter turnout figures for the first phase were awaited at the time of filing this report.
