GUWAHATI: The first phase of the high-stakes panchayat elections in Assam will be held today (Friday, May 2), across 14 districts, covering Upper Assam, Northern Assam, and the Barak Valley regions.

Polling will take place from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm under tight security. A total of 12,916 polling stations have been set up, with over 89.60 lakh voters eligible to cast their votes. In this phase, 639 candidates are contesting for zila parishad member posts, while 2,608 candidates are in the fray for anchalik panchayat seats. The phase covers 216 zila parishad constituencies, 94 anchalik panchayat constituencies, and 1,139 gaon panchayats.
The districts going to the polls today include Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi.
The two-phase elections, scheduled for May 2 and May 7, are seen as a key indicator ahead of the 2026 state assembly polls. With more than 50,000 rural posts at stake, a high voter turnout and multi-cornered contests are expected.
