GUWAHATI: A physical altercation broke out between supporters of two rival ward members near a polling station in Assam’s Cachar district at Katigorah on Friday, May 2, during the first phase of the Panchayat elections.

Contrary to some circulating reports suggesting that the violence erupted due to an attempt to capture a polling booth by a group of miscreants, the scuffle was unrelated to any such activity. It was a result of tensions between groups supporting different candidates.
“The incident took place between supporters of different ward members,” Cachar’s Superintendent of Police conveyed to GPlus. “There is blatant news flowing around that it was because of an attempt to rig the voting process, but no such thing has occurred.”
“Also,” the official added, “the altercation took place outside the polling station, not inside it. The voting process is going on smoothly.”
Security personnel have responded promptly following the hiccup, and additional measures were taken to restore calm in the area. Election officials were notified, and steps were implemented to ensure the voting resumed without further disturbance.
