Artificially ripened mangoes seized in Fancy Bazaar, Guwahati

GUWAHATI: A team of officials from Food and Safety Department, Kamrup (M) district has seized huge quantity of chemically treated mangoes in Fancy Bazaar area during a raid carried out on May 21.

The officials seized a total of 51 quintals of mango. Out of which, 36 quintals were seized in an operation conducted early in the morning, while 15 quintals were seized from a truck headed towards the market.

The fruits were immediately destroyed by the officials who also arrested two persons in connection with artificially ripening of mangoes using harmful chemicals such as calcium carbide. 

It should be mentioned that fruits that are treated with carbide, a fruit ripening harsh chemical, helps the fruits ripen in 24 hours. Consumption of carbide treated fruits can often lead to health hazards like stomach pain, skin diseases, and even cancer.
