GUWAHATI: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Kumar Borah has lodged an FIR with the Hatigaon Police Station in Guwahati, alleging a conspiracy to malign his image through a viral audio clip circulating on social media. The audio, purportedly of a telephonic conversation between two unidentified individuals, allegedly links Borah’s name to a financial demand related to the coal trade.

The FIR, filed on Sunday, April 6, has claimed that the clip was created and circulated to defame and blackmail Borah, and to weaken his political position amid the Congress party’s campaign against illegal coal syndicates in Assam. In the complaint, Borah further stated that he has never solicited money from anyone involved in the coal business and termed the content of the audio “fabricated.”
“One of the persons in the said conversations allegedly demanded money from the other person referring to me,” Borah said. “The person at the other end seems to be in the coal business. This is a conspiracy to weaken our fight against the illegal coal syndicate.”
He additionally named one Likhan Kumbang as the individual responsible for uploading the audio clip and demanded action under relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
Borah is currently in Gujarat for the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) session.
