GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan on Monday, April 7, to discuss the state's plan to launch its first-ever satellite. The initiative aims to strengthen flood management, policy planning, and border monitoring in the state.

ISRO has assured full support for the project, and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is expected to be signed soon. The proposed satellite will be a low Earth orbit system, designed to provide continuous and contiguous coverage of the entire state.
A space observatory will be set up in Guwahati’s Chandrapur area to support India’s satellite launch missions. The first phase of the observatory is scheduled for commissioning by January 2026.
The Chief Minister lauded ISRO’s contributions to India's space journey and described its scientists as a source of inspiration.
During the meeting, the ISRO Chairman briefed Sarma on the cryogenic-powered GSLV launch vehicle, which will be instrumental in India's upcoming Mission Gaganyaan.
