GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday, April 16, stated that no protests or demonstrations over the amended Waqf law would be permitted in the state. He clarified that while people were free to hold personal views on the matter, taking to the streets would not be tolerated.

“Waqf law is a reality,” Sarma captioned a video posted on his X account. “Anyone who wants to oppose this has the complete freedom to go to the Supreme Court.”
“But in Assam, neither stone pelting nor any violence will be tolerated in the name of Waqf,” he added. “Those who are opposing this should remember this very well.”
The chief minister’s remarks have arrived a week after several protestors were detained in central and western Assam. The group, led by the All Assam Minorities Students' Union (AAMSU), was on its way to Guwahati to demonstrate against the Waqf (Amendment) Act when it was stopped by police.
Additionally, on April 14, a protest in Silchar turned violent after demonstrators reportedly threw stones when police attempted to disperse them.
Relatedly, the Waqf Act 2025 has also become a source of contention in West Bengal, where three people were reported dead and many displaced due to similar protests.
