GUWAHATI: Satyajit Bordoloi, a talented footballer from Assam, achieved a significant milestone by winning the prestigious Santosh Trophy, the highest honour in Indian domestic football, this year in 2023. Representing Karnataka, he emerged victorious in the finals against Meghalaya in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, bringing fame to himself and his state. However, despite his remarkable achievement, Satyajit's success has not translated into the same recognition and opportunities in his home state.

In an interaction with the media, Satyajit expressed his joy at winning the coveted trophy and the subsequent lack of recognition he received upon returning to Assam.

He said, "I believe it is an accomplishment that every footballer in India aspires to achieve. I was thrilled to have won the prestigious Santosh Trophy. When I was away, everyone congratulated me, and it made me realise its importance. Unfortunately, when I returned to my home state, no one even acknowledged my feat."

Interestingly, Satyajit had attempted to represent Assam multiple times during trials in the past but was denied the opportunity.

He added, "It is always a great honour to represent my home state, but for unknown reasons, it never materialised. Consequently, I appeared for Karnataka, and they selected me."

During the time of his triumph, Satyajit was playing for Sporting Club Bengaluru in the Bangalore League, which made him eligible to represent Karnataka.

However, four months after his achievement, he finds himself playing exhibition matches in Guwahati and participating in local leagues with limited future prospects, according to reports.

Furthermore, his contract with Sporting Club Bengaluru has also ended.

Expressing his disappointment, Satyajit revealed, "Neither the government nor the local council in my hometown recognised or appreciated my achievements. I would have liked to share my experiences and contribute to the growth of the game in Assam. However, I don't think I will be given that opportunity. I even attempted to meet some ministers and top leaders, but it seems nothing has worked."

Satyajit, who holds a degree in physical education from Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Gwalior, expressed his desire to utilise his knowledge and skills to contribute to the development of football in Assam.

However, the lack of recognition and support has hindered his aspirations.
