Aadhaar in Assam from October, to enrol 316.34 lakh residents

GUWAHATI: The much-awaited Aadhaar Card implementation in Assam has finally got momentum and it is expected to go full swing in the first part of October. The State Registrar, the General Administration Department (GAD) has issued work orders to the 6 shortlisted firms.

The entire State has been divided into 10 (ten) zones for the project. GAD has already identified/notified 1,241 enrollment Centres in the state spreading in 33 districts.

The Deputy Commissioners (DC) would be the Enrollment Agency under whose direct supervision the Aadhaar implementation work would be carried out. All the DCs have been notified in this regard.

Important Aadhar points (application and submission)

· The Unique Identification Authority of India issues a 12 — digit number that is called Aadhaar Card to Indian residents.

· The Aadhaar Card Enrollment application form would be provided to the residents in the enrollment centres.

· The form can be also downloaded online through UIDAI website or by visiting nearest Aadhaar Enrollment Centres, banks/Post Offices etc.

· Once the application has been submitted, the Aadhaar Card can be downloaded online after 10-12 days from the date of submission of application.

· Aadhar is considered a proof of residence and not a proof of citizenship.

· For the generation of Aadhaar Cards one needs to submit original documents of POA/ Proof of date of Birth/Proof of Residents etc at the time of submitting applications.

· A person can get his/her Aadhaar number/card free of cost.

· An Aadhar number can be used while opening a bank account, applying for passport, booking e-tickets and many other places where there is a need to establish identity.

A series of IEC activities for creating publicity and awareness among the residents on the necessity of Aadhaar Cards i.e in getting government benefits/subsidies etc. including the procedures of Aadhaar Card generation has also been planned by the GA Department with the help and guidance of UIDAI.

It is expected that the firms would have a year's time to complete the task of providing Aadhar cards to 316.34 (lakh) residents of the state. An estimated 24.34 lakh residents have generated their Aadhar numbers in Assam of the total of 340.68 lakh.
