Critical Hernia operation successfully carried out at Narayana Superspeciality Hospital

GUWAHATI: A team of specialist surgeons from Narayana Superspeciality Hospital Guwahati successfully operated on a 57-year-old lady patient who was suffering from a large incisional hernia which was already operated four times in the past. She was presented with third recurrence at Narayana Superspeciality Hospital.

Dr. Pinak Dasgupta, Consultant – GI Surgery who was the Chief Surgeon, mentioned that the mammoth task of reconstructing the whole abdominal wall which had multiple defects was indeed an uphill task. He said, “This was the first time that this kind of surgery for such extensive hernia repair was done in North East.”

The procedure which involved separating the deepest layer of abdominal muscle and covering the whole of abdomen with a giant prosthesis in the inter-muscular plane, the whole procedure of abdominal reconstruction took almost 7 hours.

Associate surgeon, Dr. Saikat Mallik, Consultant – GI Surgery, said, “Large incisional hernia repair is always a matter of challenge, and when it’s a recurrent hernia which has been operated multiple times in the past, the complicacies are logically multiple to the number of times its operated previously.”

Dr. Kundan Hazarika, Consultant - Critical Care insisted, “It’s the team effort of multiple doctors and the nursing team involved with patient care, which leads to successful outcome in such complicated cases.”
