Wrestlers' Protest: Assam Sportsperson To Return National Bronze Medal

GUWAHATI: Standing in solidarity with the Indian wrestlers protesting against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Charan Singh in Jantar Mantar, former Assam lawn ball bronze medallist Abhijit Majumdar has decided to return his medal.

The Assam Trinamool Congress general secretary, Majumdar, won a Bronze Medal in Lawn Ball in the 2011 National Games in Ranchi.

Addressing the media in Guwahati on Wednesday, Majumdar said, "When our athletes won medals, the Prime Minister and the President met and congratulated them. But today, when the same athletes have been continuously protesting against sexual misconduct, they don't have the time to stand by them."

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi talks about Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, but today the BJP government is silent when the minor wrestlers accused BJP MP and WFI president Brij Bhushan Charan Singh of sexual harassment. We are deeply pained by the discriminatory treatment of these women sportspersons," he added.

"As a mark of protest against this stance of the BJP government, I have decided to return my National Games Bronze Medal to the Indian government," Majumdar, who won the medal by representing Meghalaya, further said.

"It is painful to return one of my medals, but I have ignored my pain because of the grief our female wrestlers have received," he added.
