GUWAHATI: As the month of April approaches, the monsoons are not too far away. However, the enchanting monsoon rains will also give way to flooding issues in Guwahati, especially in areas like Nabin Nagar.

Nabin Nagar every year becomes severely inundated with floodwater post-rains, causing hardship to the residents. The drains fill up with water and overflow into the streets, and enter residents' homes; vehicular and pedestrian movement requires a Herculean effort.

However, initiatives by the authorities have culminated in steps being taken on the ground. Desiltation is being undertaken in Nabin Nagar and other nearby areas to clear out the drains before the rains. GMC workers are scooping out the sludge and carrying these away.

But, the question arises, will desiltation alone improve the situation of flooding in Guwahati’s Nabin Nagar?

Talking to GPlus, a senior official from GMC said, “Proper desiltation and cleaning of drains is being undertaken in every nook and cranny of the locality, which will reduce the impact of floods in the area in the upcoming months, we project.”

However, it remains to be seen whether only the clearing up of the waste and sludge from the drains will be a solution to a long-standing flood problem in the area.
