Who Should Not Take the COVID-19 Vaccine According to Bharat Biotech

On January 16, the Indian government launched the world’s largest vaccination drive across the country. Two vaccines are being used: Serum Institute’s Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s COVAXIN. On January 19, Bharat Biotech has released a fact sheet about the process involved and who should not take the vaccine.


According to the fact sheet, you should not take the vaccine if:

  1. Have any history of allergies.
  2. Have fever.
  3. Have a bleeding disorder or are on a blood thinner.
  4. Are immune compromised or are on a medicine that affects your immune system.
  5. Are pregnant.
  6. Are breastfeeding.
  7. Have received another COVID-19 vaccine.
  8. Any other serious health related issues, as determined by the Vaccinator/officer supervising vaccination.

The fact sheet also lists side effects that include pain, swelling or itching, fever, malaise, weakness, rashes, nausea and vomiting. Recipients are also warned of severe allergic reaction that may include difficulty in breathing, swelling of the face and throat, fast heart-beat, rashes all over the body, dizziness and weakness.


"Individuals who are prioritised under the public health program of the ministry of health and family welfare will be covered under this endeavour. Informing the individuals about the offer for a vaccination with Covaxin will rest with the respective government program officials.

 
Those offered Covaxin at pre-specified booths will have the options to receive or reject administration of the vaccine," stated the fact sheet released by Bharat Biotech.
