This stunning ensemble, known as the ‘potloi’, was crafted from 24K gold and was designed by celebrated Manipuri designer Robert Naorem. The ‘potloi’ is an iconic segment of the Meitei Manipuri bridal attire, with its cylindrical, drum-shaped skirt setting it apart from other Indian bridal wear.
The skirt is made from thick fiber and bamboo, covered in satin, and intricately adorned with sequins, mirrors, and elaborate threadwork. Secured with a decorative belt, the skirt is additionally complemented by a sheer veil that drapes around the bride's body.
Traditionally, Manipuri brides wear a green blouse paired with a white shawl. However, Urvashi’s distinct look featured a rich red monochrome outfit with heavy gold embroidery, making the garment even more eye-catching. The ‘Kokgee Leiteng’, a grand, tiered headpiece completed her attire, along with layered gold necklaces.
The traditional Manipuri bridal ensemble is deeply rooted in the region’s cultural heritage, and Urvashi's showcase was a proud moment for Manipuri fashion. This is the first time a Bollywood celebrity has donned the intricate Manipuri bridal ‘potloi’, shining a spotlight on Manipuri fashion in the global fashion scene.
Naorem, known for promoting North Eastern fashion, has previously worked with renowned personalities like Sushmita Sen, Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu, and Lara Dutta, showcasing traditional Manipuri everyday wear like the ‘innaphee’ and ‘phanek.’
