A recent advisory has been issued in this regard, particularly warning against children standing in front of the rider or sitting as pillion passengers without proper headgear.
The directive has highlighted concerns that while adult riders usually wear helmets, children often do not, making them vulnerable in case of accidents. The police have clarified that non-compliance with the rule will result in penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act. The Superintendent of Traffic Police has also urged parents and guardians to ensure their children’s safety by adhering to the new regulation.
The move has raised the question; should other cities follow Shillong’s example? With increasing two-wheeler usage in Northeast, and frequent road accidents plaguing the roads these days, ensuring children's safety has become a pressing concern.
Experts have also argued that children are at greater risk in accidents due to their smaller size and lesser ability to brace for impact.
