GUWAHATI: Two students from Meghalaya have tragically died due to food poisoning at a private school hostel in T. Kagepura village, Mandya district, Karnataka. Several other students have been hospitalised. In response to the incident, local authorities have arrested the school’s owner, and the hostel warden The school has been shut down, and an investigation is currently underway.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma confirmed the arrests and expressed his concerns, stating on Twitter, “The owner of the school and the hostel warden have been arrested, and the school in Mandya District, Karnataka, has been closed following the food poisoning incident. This led to the unfortunate deaths of two young boys and the hospitalisation of other children from Meghalaya with severe illness. We are making all efforts to bring the children back home.”
One of the deceased students from Meghalaya was 13 years old, and several others remain hospitalised. In response to the incident, the Meghalaya government has dispatched Commissioner and Secretary (Home) Cyril Diengdoh and other officials to Karnataka to assist with the investigation on March 17. CM Sangma also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 3 lakh to the families of the deceased and pledged to cover the medical expenses of the affected students.
The Meghalaya government is working closely with Karnataka officials to support the affected families and ensure the safety of the remaining students.
