In a conversation with GPlus in May, Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, former Director of IIT Guwahati, emphasised the importance of creating a supportive ecosystem for students under stress.

Ahuja explained, “We try to provide a good ecosystem for students so they don’t feel stressed.”

Ahuja highlighted that IIT Guwahati offers counseling services to help students manage the pressures of academic life.

However, he also acknowledged that societal pressures often prevent students from seeking help openly.

Ahuja said, “ we want to develop an engineer who is good at everything”.

He encouraged students to engage in sports and social activities, emphasising that “study shouldn’t be your only aim.”

His vision is to develop well-rounded engineers who are successful both academically and personally.

Despite these efforts, the recent tragedy on campus has sparked further scrutiny of how effectively IIT Guwahati supports its students.
