Wanted Assam Criminal Claiming 42 Murders, Shot Dead

GUWAHATI: Bubu Konwar, one of the most notorious and wanted criminals of Assam, was shot dead in a gunfight with the police in Geleky, Sivasagar district, on Wednesday, June 23.

Bubu was responsible for several high-profile murders in the state and claimed to have killed 42 people over the years. He was wanted by Assam police on charges of contract killing, car theft, drug trafficking, kidnapping, and extortion.

This information was shared by Special Director-General of Police G.P. Singh on his official Twitter handle.

"One veteran criminal Bubu Konwar has been grievously injured in exchange of fire with @SivasagarPol at Geleky, Sibsagar when he targeted the police team. Has been taken to hospital. One pistol has been recovered from his possession," he tweeted.

G.P Singh, in another tweet, confirmed the death of the wanted criminal. "Bubu Konwar succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at Geleky Civil Hospital," he added.

The police encounter took place when Bubu and one of his associates tried to flee a police check and fired at the personnel present. His associate managed to escape, according to police.

Earlier, in March 2021, Bubu was arrested in Jorhat with 35 grams of suspected brown sugar. However, he managed to get out on bail.

In November 2016, he was arrested in connection with car theft. It was at that time when he admitted in front of media that he was a contract killer and had killed 42 people in exchange for money.

Assam Police said Bubu graduated toward organised crimes after starting as a petty thief as a teenager.
