GUWAHATI : Indian Railway has decided to replace Urdu with Sanskrit on platform signboards in Uttarakhand.
The decision has been taken as per provision of the Railway manual. According to the manual, names of railway stations should be written in Hindi, English and in the second language of the state.
In 2010, the Uttarakhand government declared Sanskrit as the official second language of the state.
The then chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that he intended to promote Sanskrit in Uttarakhand. Himachal Pradesh followed suit in 2019. Later Moradabad railway station division issued the order after a local neta pointed it out.
Deepak Kumar, chief public relations officer, Northern Railway said that other than Hindi and English, the names of railway stations should be written on signboards in the state's second language.
