Urban Assam Spends Twice As Much As Rural Households: Survey

 

GUWAHATI: As per the data revealed in the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) 2022-23, the Monthly Per Capita Expenditure (MPCE) of Assam’s urban population far exceeds that of the rural population in the state. 

The data revealed that rural households in Assam spend an average of ₹3,546 in MPCE, while urban households in the state spend an average of ₹6,210 in MPCE.

The expenditure gap between the rural and urban population was the most pronounced in Meghalaya with an 83% difference in spending average, followed by Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand with a difference of 77%. 

Meanwhile, Sikkim had the highest MPCE, with urban households spending an average of ₹12,125 and rural households spending an average of ₹7,787, while Chhattisgarh stood at the bottom of the list with their rural household expenditure at ₹2,575, and an urban household expenditure of ₹4,557.

Moreover, the survey also unveiled a stark disparity in the expenditures incurred by households in the top 5% of India’s population, with the rural and urban population having an average MPCE of ₹10,581 and ₹20,846 respectively, and the bottom 5% of India’s population, which has an average MPCE of ₹1,441 in rural areas and ₹2,087 in the urban areas, which revealed a widening gap between the rich and the poor. 

The National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation conducted the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) from August 2022 to July 2023 after an 11-year gap, in order to generate estimates of household MPCE and its distribution separately for the rural and urban sectors of the country.
