Unregulated Bus Fare Leaves Commuters In Guwahati Struggling, ASTC Promises Action

GUWAHATI: Guwahati's daily commuters are facing a major problem with unregulated bus fares and non-issuance of tickets, raising serious concerns about transparency in public transport. Many have complained that conductors often refuse to provide tickets after collecting fares, leaving passengers vulnerable to overcharging without any proof of payment.

Talking to GPlus, Anichur Rahman, a daily  commuter on city buses, said, "I was travelling from Khanapara to Jalukbari and had to pay Rs 40. When I asked for the ticket, the conductor refused to give one and questioned if I even knew the rules. This happened around 3:32 p.m. on January 4, 2025, in a bus bearing number GSC 2642," he said.

Another daily commuter seeking anonymity talking to GPlus said, "The fare seems to vary based on the conductor's mood. Sometimes they charge Rs 30 for the same route, and at other times Rs 40 or more, with no explanation given and no ticket issued. When we ask for the receipt they often say their bus ticket machine is not working."

For working professionals and students who rely on buses for daily travel, this inconsistency in fares is becoming a serious challenge.

A 19 year old college student talking to GPlus said, "I take the bus to my college every day. Most of the time, conductors refuse to give tickets, and when I insist, they either overcharge me or argue."

However, talking to GPlus, a senior official from the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) said, "We are aware of such complaints, and the issue of unregulated fares is being investigated. Commuters can directly lodge complaints by calling our toll-free number if conductors refuse to issue tickets or overcharge."
