Universities Must Conduct Final Year Exams: Supreme Court

GUWAHATI: The Supreme Court of India has upheld University Grants Commission's (UGC) July 6 circular to hold University final year exams.

The Supreme Court on Friday, 28 August, ruled that states cannot promote final year students without examination as ordered by UGC, while adding that they have the liberty to approach the UGC to seek postponement of the exams.

The verdict was based on a bunch of petitions challenging guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) that have asked for final-year university examinations to be conducted across the country by the end of September this year.

"States must hold exams to promote students. However, under the Disaster Management Act, states can postpone exams in view of pandemic and can consult UGC to fix dates," the court ruled.
