'Under the Sal Tree' Theatre Festival Marks 14th Edition In Goalpara

GUWAHATI: As Badungduppa Kalakendra in the Goalpara district of Assam gears up to celebrate its silver jubilee in the upcoming year, theatre enthusiasts have been invited to the 14th edition of the 'Under the Sal Tree' theatre festival which is scheduled for December 15, 16, and 17.

The festival, globally acclaimed for its eco-friendly setting amidst Sal tree plantations, founded by the late Sukracharjya Rabha, a revered theatre personality in the region, the festival distinguishes itself with a natural ambiance, devoid of artificial devices, even for amplifying actors' voices. Bamboo and straw are the sole materials employed for constructing the stage and seating arrangements, emphasising sustainability. As the 14th edition commences, Badungduppa Kalakendra reflects on its journey of relentless experimentation with theatre as an art form, anticipating the milestone of the Silver Jubilee in 2024.

Managing Director Madan Rabha said while talking to the media, "It has not been a cakewalk for us. Challenges were many, but so immaculate was your support that it made everything seem possible and most significantly unforgettable."

The three-day festival will feature five plays, commencing with the Rabha language play 'Madaiah Muchi' on December 15, directed by Sukracharjya Rabha. Bengali play 'Srijon Hobe Kabe' and Bengali play 'Pala Kuntala' are set for the following days, along with Assamese play 'Ratnakar' and Chhattisgarhi-Hindi play 'Charandas Chor.'

The evening discussions following each play will provide an introspective journey, fostering self-evaluation and retrospection in preparation for the forthcoming Silver Jubilee celebration.
Badungduppa Kalakendra President Cheena Rabha and Secretary Lakhikanta Rabha extend an invitation to theatre, art, and culture enthusiasts, continuing the theatre revolution initiated by the late Sukracharjya Rabha. The 'Under the Sal Tree' festival, known for its avant-garde ‘Hygiene Theatre’ movement, emphasises the importance of coexisting with nature.

Late Sukracharjya Rabha, who passed away in 2018, initiated the festival in 2008 to redefine reality through self-realisation and challenge colonial binaries. This year's festival is supported by Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, and Bongaigaon Refinery.
