ULFA (I) Condemns Pro-Khalistani Group's Threat To Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: The United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) has written an open letter to the pro-Khalistan group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) responding to the group's recent threat to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The banned militant outfit called the threat to the Assam CM "unfortunate and misunderstood".

The ULFA (I) urged the SFJ not to make "unwanted" comments.

In the letter, the ULFA (I) highlighted the generosity and customs of the "Tholgiri" people of Assam, who refrained from any mental or physical harassment of the Sikhs living in Assam and the West-Southeast Asia (WeSEA) region in the aftermath of "Operation Bluestar," launched by the Centre at the Golden Temple in Amritsar from June 1 to June 10, 1984.

The letter also stated that no Sikhs were killed or harassed in Assam or WeSEA during the "brutal killing of Sikhs following the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984."

Even though there was a Congress government in both Assam and Delhi at the time, the political leaders of Assam refrained from making negative remarks about the freedom-loving Sikhs, and "the same is true today."

The letter also stated that there is no justification for the brutal torture of the eight members of 'Khalistan and Waris Punjab De' who were recently brought from distant Punjab and imprisoned in Dibrugarh jail and that the group has not received any information that is contrary to the customs of the Assamese people.

The ULFA (I) concluded its letter by urging the leaders of Sikhs for Justice to recall the role of the political leaders and people of Assam in that terrible situation in the past and to refrain from making such unwarranted remarks.

In addition, they emphasised that the people of Assam know "the history of the Sikhs, adore the revolution, and comprehend the essence of the freedom struggle."
