GUWAHATI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued show cause notices to 18 medical colleges and hospitals across the country, including two from Assam—Lakhimpur Medical College and Nagaon Medical College and Hospital—for failing to comply with the mandatory Anti-Ragging Regulations, 2009.

According to the notice on January 23, these institutions have not obtained the required anti-ragging undertakings from students and their parents/guardians, a critical measure mandated by the regulations to curb ragging in educational institutions. The UGC emphasised that this non-compliance poses a serious risk to student safety and is a violation of the established guidelines.

The regulations clearly state that every student must submit an anti-ragging undertaking at the time of admission and at the beginning of each academic year. The failure of these institutions to secure these undertakings has led to the issuance of this notice, requiring them to explain the lapse within seven days of receipt.

The UGC has warned that failure to provide a satisfactory explanation within the stipulated timeframe may result in stringent actions, including penalties and other corrective measures.
