GUWAHATI: Two individuals were apprehended on Friday, December 20, for allegedly stealing street dogs in Guwahati's Rehabari area, with the intention of smuggling them for trade in Meghalaya.

The duo, identified as Rupam Sarkar from Lokhra and Dipu Das, was caught red-handed in the Paltan Bazar area following a complaint filed by Gaurav Sharma, a resident of Janapath, Nabin Nagar.
The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m., when Gaurav Sarma, a resident of Nabin Nagar, witnessed the suspects stuffing stray dogs into gunny bags near the Employment Exchange Office.
Sarma, who was leaving a nearby canteen, noticed the suspicious activity and attempted to intervene. "When I tried to stop them, they threatened me with sharp objects and attempted to flee," Sarma stated in his complaint to the Paltan Bazar Police Station. With the help of bystanders and police, the suspects were apprehended and brought to the station.
Upon further inquiry, the two suspects admitted to capturing the dogs for illegal trade. They confessed to smuggling the animals to a dealer in Pilangkata, Meghalaya, where the dogs were allegedly sold for meat.
The complaint filed by Sarma and another witness, Prabhat Satima, urged the authorities to take strict action against the accused under relevant laws.
