Two Arrested For Extortion In Guwahati Posing As ULFA Members

 

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Police have arrested two individuals for running an extortion racket while pretending to be members of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA).

The arrests came after the proprietor of The Tiles Gallery in Tetelia filed a complaint on Saturday, August 17, at Jalukbari Police Station. 

The proprietor said that they received a handwritten letter on July 31, from someone claiming to be Anup Chetia. The letter mentioned "Swadhin Asom" and instructed the owner to call a specific number. Upon calling, the accused demanded money and threatened them if they didn't pay.

Subsequently, Rs 20,000 was handed over to an associate of the caller in front of Radisson Blu Hotel on Saturday, August 17.

Police identified the suspects as Raju Das from Kalitapara and Paban Darjee from Arundhati Nagar. Raju Das had been previously arrested for similar crimes in Panbazar and Paltanbazar Police Station. It has been revealed that the duo extorted money from several commercial business establishments in Guwahati. 

Both the accused have been arrested and are currently in the custody of Jalukbari Police. Further investigation is on.
