Traffic Chaos In Bharalumukh: Residents Decry Lack Of Management

GUWAHATI: The ongoing construction of a new flyover near the Shantipur junction has left residents and commuters in Bharalumukh frustrated as they struggle with severe traffic congestion. What should have been a brief drive has turned into an ordeal, with some citizens reporting delays of over an hour to cover short distances due to the chaotic road conditions.

Local resident Abhinab Ram Barooah expressed his concerns, noting that while the construction of the flyover is a welcome development, the lack of a coordinated traffic management plan has compounded the problem. "I understand that the construction work has increased the traffic, but it’s meant for our benefit. However, there were no traffic officials deployed to help the public navigate through the congestion. It took me an hour to cover a distance of 10 metres. It just shows how incapable the traffic police department is," he said. Barooah added that in the absence of assistance, some commuters even resorted to getting out of their vehicles to direct traffic themselves.

On the other side, a traffic official from Bharalumukh Police Station acknowledged the congestion but argued that their efforts are hampered by the construction itself. “We assign officials along the entire stretch to assist the public, but the construction is a hindrance, especially during peak hours when the road becomes overcrowded,” the official explained.

As the project progresses, residents are calling for a more organised approach from the authorities, particularly during rush hours, to prevent gridlock from becoming the norm. With frustration mounting, the public awaits a more efficient traffic management system that can alleviate the strain on daily commutes. Only time will tell if the authorities can implement a strategy to ease the situation and provide relief to the residents of Bharalumukh.
