GUWAHATI: The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills has imposed a strict ban on the use of toxic substances and explosives for fishing in the Umiam River, citing environmental and ecological concerns. The ban applies specifically to the river stretch within Umlyngka village, from Sdad Wah Umkhrah to Sdad Jlu.

Invoking Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the order prohibits the use of harmful substances such as bleaching powder, ammonium sulfate, pesticides, and dynamite. The use of unauthorised fishing nets and destructive gear has also been restricted under this directive.

The decision was prompted by reports of individuals employing hazardous methods to catch fish, causing large-scale damage to the river’s aquatic ecosystem. Authorities noted that such practices have led to the indiscriminate killing of fish and long-term degradation of biodiversity.

The authorities further stated that violators of the order will face strict legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as per the administration.
