The attack unfolded in the Baisaran area, a remote meadow accessible only on foot or horseback. Eyewitnesses said heavily armed gunmen stormed the area, targeting Hindu tourists after checking their documents and clothing. Survivors described the chaos and bloodshed, saying the attackers showed no mercy.
Among the victims was Manjunath from Shivamogga, Karnataka, who was shot dead in front of his wife and child. His wife, Pallavi, survived the attack and recounted the harrowing ordeal, claiming the gunmen deliberately spared her so she could "go tell this to Modi". She has appealed for swift repatriation of her husband’s body and support for her family.
The attack has triggered outrage across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the killings, promising that those behind the “heinous act” would face justice. Union Home Minister Amit Shah held an emergency meeting in Srinagar with Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and senior security officials to assess the situation.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the final death toll is yet to be confirmed but acknowledged this was "much larger than anything we've seen directed at civilians in recent years". Security forces suspect the militants may have infiltrated from across the border.
The National Investigation Agency will begin its probe into the incident on Wednesday, April 23.
Meanwhile, Anantnag Police have activated a 24/7 emergency help desk for tourists. Helpline numbers have been issued for those seeking assistance or information: 9596777669, 01932225870, and WhatsApp 9419051940.
