GUWAHATI: Floods and landslides have been wreaking havoc across the state of Assam as incessant rains and erosion continue to worsen the already grim situation in the state arising from the rapidly increasing COVID-19 cases.
One more death has been reported from the Cachar District of Assam due to landslide as per Assam State Disaster Management Authority’s (ASDMA) state-wide landslide report. With this, the death toll due to landslide disasters has risen to 25.
In other parts of the state, floods have affected around 15 lakh people and taken 33 lives in 2,197 villages across 21 districts of Assam as per ASDMA’s latest flood report. Over 15,000 people have been taking shelter in 254 relief camps and centres set up across the state.

Over 87,000 hectares of crop area is now submerged under water. Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Department has also issued warnings for the state of Assam for the next few days as rivers continue to remain in full spate with the water level in rivers rising continuously due to monsoon showers.
In the meantime, 548 new cases of Coronavirus have been reported in the past 24 hours according to a tweet by state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The minister has been tweeting on the micro-blogging website, appealing to citizens of Guwahati to remain extra cautious due to the sudden spike in the number of cases.
“In the last 24 hours 378 cases have been reported from Guwahati City alone. We request all to follow lockdown rules sincerely,” the minister said.
With this, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the state have risen up to 8,955. Over 5,800 people have recovered from the disease in Assam and of the total number of cases, 3,109 are currently active.
