GUWAHATI: Telangana-based environmentalist M Karunakar Reddy has been named the first recipient of the prestigious Jadav Payeng International Award, presented by the Jyoti-Protap Education Trust in Assam’s Jorhat district. This new award recognises extraordinary efforts in climate action and nature conservation.

With a cash prize of ₹2 lakh and a citation, the award will be presented to Reddy in January 2025. Rituraj Phukan, a member of the award’s five-person selection committee, commended Reddy’s unwavering commitment to the environment, referring to him as the “green man of India.”
The Jyoti-Protap Education Trust, founded by Protap Saikia, introduced this honour in tribute to Jadav Payeng, celebrated as the ‘Forest Man of India’ for his creation of a 550-hectare forest in Assam’s Jorhat. Payeng has gained widespread recognition for his ongoing environmental preservation efforts, which focus on combating climate change and supporting biodiversity.
The award ceremony will be held in January 2025 at Jyoti Protap Bidyalay in Teok, Jorhat.
