Supreme Court to hear Plea over Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

GUWAHATI: The Supreme Court of India has declared to hear the petition over the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.

The plea was filed by a forum panel, Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill.

A three-judge bench constituting of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, Justices Sanjay Krishnan Kaul and Ashok Bhushan advocated the forum to wait for Rajya Sabha’s decision over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.

The Lok Sabha had already passed the Bill on January 8 and it was stalled by the Rajya Sabha on January 9. Many northeastern states held massive protests against the bill.

The bill seeks to amend the Citizenship Act 1955 to grant Indian nationality to Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan after six years of living in India.
