Supreme Court criticises Centre over ‘Delays’ in the NRC Process

GUWAHATI: The Supreme Court has heavily criticised the Centre over the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC) process and authorities said that it is “hell-bent on not allowing the work to continue” on February 5.

The Apex Court held the Ministry of Home Affairs accountable for its plea that seeks to stall the NRC work for two weeks as the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will be engaged in election duty.

Authorities from the Supreme Court said that the deadline will not be extended beyond July 31 as the elections and NRC must go together. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said that the Centre is not cooperating in the NRC process and that the entire effort of the MHA is to destroy the NRC process.

The Apex Court has asked the Election Commission to consider exempting certain state officers from election duty to ensure that the NRC process continues on.
