Concerns Raised Over Blocking Of Road To Accomodate Alleged VIP Movement In Guwahati's Jalukbari

GUWAHATI: A social media post on Monday, May 5, has sparked public concern over road blockage in Guwahati’s Jalukbari area to accomodate alleged VIP movement. A law graduate on X (formerly Twitter), @TheInjamulHaque, shared a photograph showing a rope barring a section of the road, with vehicles seen waiting behind it.

“Is royalty rolling through or something, why are the roads closed like this?” The post read, in a satirical reference to an earlier remark made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in January 2022.

At that time, the chief minister had publicly expressed frustration over traffic being halted during his arrival, asking, “Koi Raja Maharaja aa raha hai kya?” and instructed authorities not to inconvenience the public for his movement.

"Class from 9:15. Roads are blocked since last 20 mins due to VIP movement. Why always the normal public suffer?" Another social media user, @PratikshaSarma, posted regarding the situation.

The recent posts have prompted a fresh wave of criticism and debate over the continued use of road closures, particularly for VIP convoys. Residents of Guwahati have continuously expressed concern over repeated traffic disruptions over the years, especially in areas already facing congestion.

No official statement has been issued yet regarding the reason behind the Jalukbari road closure.
