Students Protest Across the World including Guwahati to Demand Action on Climate Change

GUWAHATI: Students from J B Law College in Guwahati participated in a global exercise where students from across the globe skipped their classes on Friday, March 15 to protest against their governments’ failure to take sufficient action against global warming.

Students across the globe skipped their classes on Friday, March 15 to protest against their governments’ failure to take sufficient action against global warming.

These strikes were held across 100 countries, including New Delhi, Hong Kong, Wellington, New Zealand, Finland and many more.

These strikes were inspired by 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg who began holding solitary demonstrations outside the Swedish Parliament last year. Thunberg was recently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The organiser for the event, Carla Reemtsma, a 20-year-old university student said that social media has been key in reaching people directly to coordinate all the events across the globe. Based on a report by The Hindu, she was in 50 whatsapp groups and was responding to around 30,000 messages per day.

Scientists from three countries, Britain, Finland and Germany have backed these protests and thousands of them have signed petitions in support of these students.
