“On May 1, a statue will be unveiled and a street will be named after Bodofa Upendranath Brahma in Delhi, as a mark of tribute to his invaluable contributions,” Sarma posted via his official account on X.
On the chief minister’s direction, Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota also chaired a review meeting with officials to assess preparations and ensure smooth execution of the upcoming event in Delhi.
The tribute in the national capital coincides with the anniversary of Brahma’s death and is aimed at recognising his role in advocating for education, identity, and political awareness among the Bodo people. Sarma stated that the event will highlight Brahma’s "invaluable contributions" to the nation.
Born on March 31, 1956, Upendranath Brahma was a Bodo social activist who played a key role in shaping student-led activism in Assam. He served as the president of the Goalpara District Students Union in 1978–79 and later rose to become vice-president and subsequently president of the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) between 1981 and 1986. Under his leadership, the ABSU expanded its focus from cultural to political issues, aiming to foster political maturity among the Bodo youth.
Brahma passed away on May 1, 1990. In recognition of his leadership and vision, the title "Bodofa" (Guardian of Bodos) was posthumously conferred on him on May 8, 1990. The day of his death is now observed as Bodofa Day every year.
