Severe Flooding Ravages Multiple Districts In Assam; Death Toll Rises To 26

 

GUWAHATI: The Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) has released a grim assessment of the flooding situation in Assam, revealing widespread devastation across several districts. As of Wednesday, June 5, critical rivers like Kopili at Kampur and Dharamtul, as well as Kushiyara at Karimganj, have surged above danger levels.

Altogether 10 districts are currently grappling with the flood's wrath: Cachar, Karimganj, Morigaon, Hojai, Nagaon, Dima-Hasao, Hailakandi, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), and Karbi Anglong West. Within these districts, 22 revenue circles are bearing the brunt of the inundation.

The flood has engulfed 388 villages, affecting 246,813 individuals. Nagaon district is witnessing the harshest blow, with 129 villages submerged and a population impact of 140,224. 

A total of 133 relief camps have been set up across the affected districts, providing sanctuary to 22,373 people. Nagaon alone shelters 5,852 individuals in these camps. Additionally, 15,887 people have sought refuge in relief distribution centres, with Hojai accommodating the largest contingent at 14,048.

One death has been reported in Cachar, bringing the total death toll to 26. The flood has also inflicted immense suffering on animals, with 32,246 reported affected.

Urban areas, including major locales in Guwahati like Chandmari, Bamunimaidam, and Maligaon, are grappling with significant flooding. Dispur has also reported water-logging in key areas such as Baghorbori-Greenland Path and Sinaki Path.
