Almost 72 Hours Of Constant Drizzle Cools Down Guwahati, Heats Up Commuters

GUWAHATI: Guwahati has been receiving light showers for the past three days, bringing down the temperature that had only recently breached a 50-year-old record, but all has not been fun and glory.

The monsoon season is likely to continue in the Northeast, especially Guwahati, until October 10, threatening to dampen the Durga Puja spirit.

According to the weather forecasting agency, there will be light to moderate rainfall until October 8, while October 9 and 10 will witness heavy rain and thunderstorms over parts of Assam and Guwahati.

The rain has added to the monumental troubles of the residents of the city and commuters alike-- be it the deplorable road conditions, waterlogging or ongoing construction.

Talking to GPlus, Anurag Bora, a resident of Rajgarh said, “You have seen the pathetic condition of the road in Rajgarh which is making it difficult for the commuters who have to travel daily to their work or businesses. And to top it the incessant rain is making it worse, even affecting the daily traffic.”

“I, however, do not understand why these road construction projects throughout the city are undertaken just before the monsoon season? Who is to blame for this condition throughout our area and the rest of Guwahati,” he further added.

Speaking to GPlus, a Guwahati traffic official said,”As with the incessant rain, at times it gets really difficult to manage the traffic. We hope for a little break from the rain as the Puja is also just around the corner.”

The weather, although favourable for the residents of the city being a respite from the heat, still is on the way to mar the Durga Puja celebrations and festivities. Many artisans have been compelled to cover their idols in plastic wraps, as it has impacted the workflow of the idol-making process. For now, craftsmen and citizens alike wait with bated breath for the damp weather to subside, as it may impact the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations in the long run.

Even the construction of puja pandals has slowed down in the given situation.

The residents are also fearful of the weather playing a spoilsport in their Durga Puja plans. Only time will tell, what is to entail!
