SEBA Board Issues Notice Regarding Elective Subject in Assam Schools

GUWAHATI: The Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) has issued a notification regarding the implementation of provisions contained in the Assamese Language learning Act 2020. According to the notice, the following guidelines are to be followed by every school affiliated under SEBA Board - 


1. The school's belonging to other than 6th Scheduled areas, Barak valley and Boro medium schools of other areas, will have two options as mentioned below - 


a. If the student does not opt for Assamese as a MIL subject,  he/she can choose Assamese (E) as an elective subject. 


b. If a student neither opts Assamese as MIL nor Assamese (elective) as an elective subject then he/she has to opt for Assamese (elective) as one additional subject that is Assamese (E) and it will be the 7th paper of 100 marks for that particular student. The total subjects for such candidates will be seven and the marks obtained in this additional seventh paper will not be counted for merit purposes and it will be shown separately in the mark sheet. However, the candidates must appear in the examination of the seventh paper to qualify in the HSLC (High School Leaving Certificate) examination the candidates who secure 45% and above in this seventh paper will get an extra certificate of proficiency.


For the schools belonging to the 6th Scheduled areas Barak Valley and Boro Medium Schools, if the student selects MIL/IL subject other than Assamese, then the student will get an option for selecting one more additional subject (7th paper) Assamese (E) which will not be a compulsory subject. Students who desire, may opt for the 7th paper, Assamese (E), however, the marks obtained in this additional seventh paper will not be counted for merit purposes and it will be shown separately in the mark sheet.


NOTE: These rules will be effective from the class IX registration for the year 2021.
