GUWAHATI: In a bid to promote sports in the country, Union Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore said that a games period will be made mandatory in schools after reducing the syllabus by 50 percent by next year.

“We have come to a stage where sports is not just a part of education, it is education. The Ministry of Education is ensuring that the syllabus in schools by 2019 is reduced by 50 percent and there will be a sports period on a regular basis,” Rathore said.

It is to be mentioned that Assam has witnessed the rise of several sports personnel recently, who’s groundbreaking performances have shattered and created new records.

The recent performance of sprint queen Hima Das helped India clinch the first ever gold at a track event.

“Reducing the school syllabus and focusing more on sports can help sports aspirants’ to be motivated to follow their dreams. Many students who want to pursue their dreams in the field of sports often feel suffocated because of academic pressure. Activity-based-education is the way forward in education,” said a teacher of a government school to G Plus.
