The burst occurred due to a pressure surge, reportedly caused by a power interruption during preparations for the installation of surge protection tanks at the Kharguli Water Treatment Plant (WTP).
As assessed by the district administration, compensation totalling ₹4,80,000 has been sanctioned under the JICA-assisted Guwahati Water Supply Project (GWSP) for the affected individuals. Each of the four families, whose homes were classified as "severely damaged," received ₹1,20,000 as part of the relief effort.
The recipients of the compensation include Anowar Hussain, Abu Fateh Ahmed, Moumin Seikh, and Binita Das.
Earlier, Jayanta Mallabaruah assured the public that the affected families would be fairly compensated. He later reaffirmed this commitment through a post on micro-blogging platform X, announcing the disbursal of the funds, saying, “Under the guidance of Hon'ble CM Dr. @himantabiswa Dangoriya and in line with the assurance I gave this morning, the Mayor has handed over the compensation amounts to the four families severely affected by the water supply pipeline explosion in Kharghuli, as per the district administration's assessment. I assure you that the compensation for the remaining families will be released soon.”
